Last Wednesday marked the official opening of the Reset Room in the Secondary Space.
The Reset Room is a dedicated, supportive space designed to help students regulate their emotions and refocus during the school day. This calm and quiet environment provides students with an opportunity to step away from the classroom when feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disengaged, allowing them to reset their mindset in a constructive way.
The Reset Room is equipped with calming resources such as sensory tools, mindfulness activities, and reflective prompts, and will be supervised by Mackenzie and Jackson. Importantly, the Reset Room also provides an opportunity for students to receive support with their classwork if needed. Whether that’s catching up on missed tasks or getting one-on-one help in a quieter environment. Our aim is to support students’ emotional well-being and encourage positive behaviour, so they can return to class ready to reengage in the learning.
Reflecting on the first week, we’ve already seen several students benefit from the space. Students have been using their 10-minute reset to engage with the tools available to ready themselves to confidently return to class ready to learn. Some feedback we have received from the students so far is:
“The Reset Room is place I can go to just chill and hang out. I always feel much better when I leave!”
“The Reset Room is a place I feel safe going to when I’m overwhelmed.”
“The Reset Room helped me calm down when I was feeling angry and frustrated.”
Staff have also noted a positive shift in student engagement and self-regulation. While it’s still early days, the response so far has been encouraging, and we look forward to refining the space and processes as we learn more about what works best for our students.
By embedding this initiative into our school culture, Cummins Area School is continuing its commitment to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for every student.
