Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Cummins Area School, we are committed to fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment through the implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). PBL is a proactive approach designed to promote respect, responsibility, and a strong sense of community, courage, and personal excellence among our students.

PBL at Cummins Area School reflects a philosophy deeply embedded in our commitment to ensuring a respectful and supportive educational atmosphere. Our aim is to empower students with the social and emotional tools necessary to thrive academically and make responsible, thoughtful choices.

We believe that cultivating a positive environment is a shared responsibility, and every staff member plays a key role in ensuring the success of PBL. To support this, our Behaviour Expectations Matrix provides clear guidelines rooted in our core values of Community, Courage, Personal Excellence, and Respect.

The matrix guides behavioural expectations at both the classroom and school-wide levels, fostering a shared understanding among staff and students. By focusing on positive reinforcement and intentional feedback, our approach encourages desired behaviours, shifting the focus from reacting to mistakes to teaching and recognising positive actions.

Additionally, PBL includes structured procedures to address behavioural errors, ensuring staff provide consistent and educative responses. This approach helps create a safe, predictable learning environment where students can excel and staff can deliver teaching excellence.

Through PBL, Cummins Area School strives to equip every student with the values and skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Habits of Character

Our Habits of Character shape our daily interactions and expectations, providing a consistent foundation across all areas of school life. Each value is colour coded to match our token system, making them easy to recognise - even for our youngest students - and helping to reinforce them in a clear and meaningful way.

PBL Rewards

Our whole school PBL reward happens once a term and is voted on by students using their values tokens which are part of our school-wide acknowledgement system. It’s a way to celebrate positive behaviour and give students a voice in choosing a reward that reflects their effort and engagement.

Non- Classroom Procedures

Designed to support positive behaviour and smooth transitions in shared areas of the school, such as the yard, corridors and toilets. These routines help create consistent expectations for students outside the classroom and reduce disruptions or unsafe behaviours. Each procedure is supported by a lesson plan, which outlines how staff explicitly teach, model and reinforce the expected behaviours in these settings.
