Miss Bennie's 1/2A class explore the Cummins Mill

Miss Bennie's Year 1/2 students are well underway with their Paddock to Plate learning expedition this term. We started our journey with a visit from Farmer Tom Crettenden, who shared his knowledge on all things farming – from equipment and machinery to different crop and soil types.

We then extended our learning with an excursion to the Cummins Mill Tuesday 9th September, where students had the chance to see firsthand how grain is transformed into flour. This gave us a closer look at one of the key processes in the paddock to plate journey, while also learning about the important role the Mill plays in supporting our local community.

To top it off, we were spoiled with a delicious cake baked by June using freshly produced SR flour straight from the Mill – a true paddock to plate experience!

Links to our Paddock to Plate Expedition:

  • Learning from a local farmer about crops, soil and machinery.

  • Visiting the Mill to focus on the process of grain to flour.

  • Understanding the Mill’s role in supporting local farmers and the community.

  • Experiencing the “plate” with June’s freshly baked cake.

We look forward to extending our expedition even further in the coming weeks with a visit to Korinya Farm Gate, where we’ll continue exploring the journey from paddock to plate - stay tuned.
