School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) are programs that allow secondary school students to combine their regular school studies with paid, hands-on work experience in an industry of their choice. These programs provide a structured pathway into careers while students complete their secondary education.
Key Features of SBATs include:
Work & Study Balance – Students work part-time with an employer while completing their high school education.
Nationally Recognised Training – Students undertake a qualification (Certificate II, III, or higher) that contributes to their final school results.
Paid Employment – Unlike standard work experience, SBATs involve paid employment under a formal contract.
Career Pathways – SBATs provide a head start in a chosen career, often leading to full-time apprenticeships, employment, or further education.
Currently, 6 out of 19 of our current Year 11 students (31%) and 11 out of 31 Year 12 students (35%) are engaged in a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT). Cummins Area School is privileged to have a highly supportive community and a diverse industry base, with many local industries eager to welcome and mentor secondary students.
Recently Cummins Meat Store, who employ a number of our current and former students featured in an ABC News article about local butchers. Isaac, who is one of two students studying a Cert 3 in Meat Processing and undertaking his SBAT with Cummins Meat Store is interviewed. Read the story in the link below.
