Empowering Students Through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Program

Writer: Cummins Area SchoolCummins Area School

In 2025, we are thrilled to launch our Kitchen and Garden Program in the junior primary area, drawing inspiration from Stephanie Alexander's renowned program and the hands-on learning happening at Ungarra Primary School.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing Grounds person, Megan, for her ongoing help and support in bringing our garden vision to life. We also extend our gratitude to John Norton for his efforts in levelling the garden bed area, preparing it for the construction of new garden beds. This collaborative effort is setting a strong foundation for a successful program.

The student engagement in these lessons has been exceptional. Many parents have shared that their children are excitedly sharing what they’ve learned in class and even requesting to bring in garden produce and seeds from home.

Our students have been working diligently to establish the program. Recently, they have been involved in pruning trees, extending the vegetable garden, and composting foliage. They have also harvested and tasted nectarines, gathered seeds from sunflowers, and planted new spring onions for the upcoming season, as noted by Mrs. Dennis.

The purpose behind the program is to continue the fight for the health and wellbeing of Australian children and young people by delivering fun, hands-on, and inclusive food education across the country. We have also integrated aspects of numeracy and literacy to create a comprehensive course for our students.

We plan to make this program uniquely ours and will seek opportunities to involve the community when appropriate.
