On Friday 4 September, Cummins Area School students joined forces with Port Lincoln High School to compete in the South Australian State Final of the 2026 Science and Engineering Challenge. Held at the Flinders Factory of the Future at Tonsley, the event brought together the top eight school teams from across the state.

Our combined team, affectionately known as Plummins, competed in a range of challenging activities, including Grab Lab, Eco-Habitech, Confounding Communications, Fish Traps, Flight, Wind Turbine, ElectraCity and Bridge.

Students worked together throughout the day to solve problems, test their designs and make improvements under pressure.

Plummins entered the competition ranked sixth in South Australia and finished in a very creditable sixth place overall. While our bridge unfortunately suffered a mishap before the final judging, the students showed persistence, teamwork and a positive attitude throughout the entire day. Several students even earned bonus points for helping to pack up equipment at the end of the competition.

We are extremely proud of how our students represented Cummins Area School and embraced this fantastic opportunity. We also thank Port Lincoln High School for continuing this valuable partnership.

A special thank you must go to the Cummins Op Shop for their generous financial contribution. Their support helped make it possible for our students to travel to Adelaide and participate in this fantastic STEM opportunity.
